Sen. Kiko Pangilinan Calls to Pass Camera Bill to Protect Citizens from Illegal Arrest

Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilli on Saturday called for a bill to be passed on the use of body cameras during police proceedings, accusing fellow legislators of unlawful arrests and using evidence by abusive police.

In a statement on Saturday, Senator Pangilinan said that the police must protect the public from the use of violence, such as abuse of power or evidence, illegal detention, and killings.

Pangilinan added that these cameras should not be deactivated until they work.

To prevent future controversy over police operations, Pangilinan has enacted its Senate Bill 427 or Body Cameras Act, which requires law enforcement agencies to enable these devices early in their use, especially if there is an imminent threat to life and safety.

Pangilinan added that these cameras should not be deactivated until they work.

He cited the case of farmer organizer Amanda Echanis, peace adviser to the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), and Randy Echanis, chairman of Anakapavis.

Amanda Lacaba Echanis, along with her one-month-old son, was arrested on December 2 in Baggao Kerupian, Baggaon, for illegal possession of weapons, ammunition, and explosives.

In an earlier statement, Anakpavis condemned Amanda's arrest, saying that police had gathered evidence against her. But the police insisted that the operation was carried out against a minor Echanis on the strength of a search warrant issued by a judge for violations of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Why not, best suggestion so far, we know most of our cops are corrupt and abusive, The bill or proposed law that will authorize body cams on police officers would lessen, if not totally eliminate, the planting of guns or drugs on the accused. The courts have seen this paradox a long time ago.
